Biological Classification

A perennial plant of the genus Rosa, belonging to the family Rosaceae, rose is one of the most popular flowers in the world. The plant has over 100 species, each of which is characterized by a group of erect shrubs that bear sharp prickles. Most of these rose species are indigenous to Asia, Europe, North America, and northwest Africa.

Blooms of rose are large and varicolored, with hues ranging from white, yellow, red, purple, terracotta, orange, peach, fuchsia to green. One flower has multiple ovaries, which are generally found enclosed in a cup-like structure called hypanthium. Number of petals vary depending on whether the plant is a pure breed or a hybrid. These petals as well as the leaves of the plant wrapping the buds of rose flowers, i.e., the sepals are actually the modified leaves of the plant. The normal leaves of the plant are pinnate and feather-like, and are borne on both sides of a common stem.
