Balsam
Balsam, or the balsam poplar, is a deciduous tree that gives off a very pleasant odor when its leaves and buds blossom in spring. These aromatic buds and leaves have been used for their fragrance by civilizations since primordial times. They have a fresh, resinous, woody, sensual sweet aroma which is generally used as a base in perfumery and in making incense.
Origin and Habitat
The balsam poplars are a group of about ten species of poplars belonging to the Salicaceae family. Native to the low-lying, moist grounds of North America, this poplar prefers the alluvial shorelines of waterways and lakes. These large deciduous trees grow up to 100 feet in height and bear broad leaves with pointed apex with a whitish waxy coating on the underside. The buds are brownish red in color and are very resinous and fragrant. This fragrance is because of a sticky gum which the buds secrete as a self mechanism against predatory insects. The harvesting season starts from February to March i.e before the buds open. The essential oil is extracted by steam distilling the resinous gums.
