Botanical Information

Though native to the southwest regions of India, cardamom plants were known in many other countries like China, Rome, Egypt, Persia, etc., for over 5000 years. These plants belonging to the genera Elettaria and Amomum of the family Zingiberaceae are evergreen perennials having thick rhizomes. Stems of the plants are erect bearing pointed leaves and white flowers.

Aromatic seedpods of cardamom plants are what constitute the spice cardamom. These pods are spindle-shaped, and have a thin outer shell that covers and holds the black seeds. While the seedpods of the plants classified under the genus Elettaria are pale green, those classified under the genus Amomum are dark brown in color.
