Copal Incense
Here you will get comprehensive informtion on Copal incense, Copal incense sticks, Copal resin, Copal essential oil, Copal, etc. Copal incense and Copal incense sticks are known for their very pleasant fragrance and other unique properties; and are made from Copal resin. Copal is a crystallized aromatic resin procured from various species of the Bursera trees of Mexico and South America. The name has been inferred from the Spanish / Aztec Nahuatl word "copalli" which means incense, a task for which copal is mainly employed. Major deposits of copal are produced from tropical legume and araucarian trees and are found in tropical or wet temperate regions. Since ancient times Copal was notably popular with the Meso-American (i.e., the Aztec, Maya, Olmec, and Teotihuacan) natives, who used it in a widespread way for chewing, traditional rituals, preserving meat, pigment binding as well as medicinal purposes. The Mayan Indians called it Pom and hold it very sacred, esp the those raisins that come from a tree struck by lightning. They believed that such a tree held the most beautiful spirit. The " Holy incense " was also employed as a sanctifier to hallow pentacles, athames, wands used in consecration and anointing ceremonies. Spiritual healers and some indigenous tribes of South America still use copal for protection, divination, banishment, exorcism, hex-breaking, love spells, meditation, and other rituals to ward off negative energy. This marvelous raisin serves as an excellent smudge and hence is commonly used in sweat lodge ceremonial gatherings for creating a mellow magical atmosphere.
Copal appears in three varieties, black, white and golden and all of them are used to make incense, incense sticks, and essential oils. The golden colored copal resembles amber and is often used as a cheap substitute. But it can be differentiated very easily by introducing a drop of alcohol on the specimen. Amber will not atall be effected by the solvent but the surface of the copal specimen will become sticky.
An aromatic tincture of copal can be prepared by dissolving it in a solution of water and ethyl alcohol and can be used to make incense papers. Alternatively, the hard resin can also be cranched into a fine powder and sprinkled over ambers of charcoal to be used as an incense.
