Elemi
Elemi is a pale yellowish aromatic resin collected from the Canarium luzonicum tree of the Burseraceae family. This resin has a sharp spicy lemon like scent with a tinge of pine and is widely used in perfumery and in making incense.
Origin
Elemi is a tropical tree native to the Philippines and Moluccas Islands, which generally grows upto 90 meters. These trees excrete the elemi resins when the leaves sprout. The resin hardens when it comes to contact with air and stops flowing when the tree sheds its leaves. These hardened gums are then collected and steam distilled to extract its essential oil. The resin is commercially available in two major forms :
- Primera which is the cleaned gum
- Secunda which is still in its crude and uncleaned state.

 Uses
- It is used in aromatherapy to treat inflammations relating to the skin, infections, wounds, mature skin, wrinkles, bronchitis, catarrh, stress and sinusitis.
- Elemi is known to counterbalance the physique and the inner spirit on a physical and spiritual level and hence is used in meditations.
- Elemi can prove to be useful while treating respiratory complaints such as bronchitis, dry cough and excess mucus.
- It is also prescribed in cases of nervous exhaustion and stress related conditions.
- Elemi is also known to have analgesic, antiviral, bactericide, balsamic, expectorant, fungicide, tonic and vulnerary properties.
- Both the oil and the resinous form are used as a fragrant additive and as a fixative in detergents, cosmetics and perfumes. Occasionally it is also used to flavor food products, alcohol and soft drinks.
It blends well with frankincense, lavender, rosemary, myrrh and sage.
