Orris
Orris is an aromatic rhizome that comes from the flowering plants known as Florentine Iris. These plants are extremely popular because of their magnificent blooms and are widely used to decorate gardens beds. They display such beauty and variety of colors that they are rightly christened after the Greek rainbow goddess "Iris". A symbol of power and majesty since ancient times, it was consecrated to the ancient Roman goddess Juno and was the beginning of the spectre.
Origin
The Florentine Iris is a perennial plant with bluish-green, narrow, flat, sword-like leaves that are 3-4 cm wide. They bear marvelous white flowers tinged with violet and a yellow beard, or even pure white flowers, which bloom from May to August. These plants are temperate to a variety of soil/climate conditions and are commercially cultivated for their rhizomes in the Mediterranean region, India, Northern Africa and Southern Europe. Although numerous varieties of this flowering plant exist, I. Germanica florentina yields the best grade of orris roots. The plant attains maturity in three years after which the roots are dug up, peeled and dried till they get a chalky appearance. The dried roots are then ground, mixed with water and distilled to obtain the essential oil.
