The strong, earthy, musky fragrance of pactchouli has always been very popular among the hippies and the bohemian crowd as it was very efficacious in energizing the body and connecting the spirit with the natural beauty of the planet. This aromatic herb has a long history of use in the fields of medicine, perfumery, cosmetics and traditional rituals. The word Patchouli is derived from the Tamil word "patch" meaning green and "ilai" meaning leaf.
Origin:
The patchouli tree is a bushy herb of the mint family and belongs to the genus Pogostemon. These large (3 feet) perennial trees have sturdy, hairy stems and large, fragrant, furry leaves. The seed-bearing flowers are very fragrant and bloom in late fall. Although patchouli is tolerant to most soil types, it prefers tropical climate. These trees were native to south east Asia but now is cultivated extensively in the Indonesian Islands, Philippines, Malaysia, China, and even South America.
The Essential oil of Patchouli:
The leaves are shade dried, partly fermented and and then steam distilled to extract the essential oil. The oil has a sharp, green fragrance initially but develops the characteristic woody, earthier aroma along with age. The color also changes from a light yellowish, pale red to a deep, dark amber upon aging. The viscosity of the oil also increases along with each passing year and so does its commercial value.
