Spikenard
Widely used in anointing rituals, Spikenard oil has been prized since ancient times, as it uplifts and inspires the psyche and spirit to selfless acts of devotion. The New Testament substantiates how Mary Magdalene used it anoint the feet of Jesus Christ during the Last Supper. Spikenard is considered to calm the nerves and promote concentration, hence is used in several traditional incense formulas to aid meditation. Apart from its aromatic properties, it also boosts a long list of sanative attributes and is widely used in ancient medicinal practices like Ayurveda and Unani as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and emmenagogue.
Origin
This aromatic rhizome is acquired from a flowering plant of the Valerian family called the Nardostachys jatamansi, native to India, Nepal, Bhutan and some parts of China. The name is derived from the Hindu word Jatamansi which means "lock of hair". . The spikenard plants are about a meter tall and bears pink, bell-shaped flowers. The thick, dark essential oil is obtained by crushing and distilling the underground stems.
